چکیده
J_N 1916 Lorenz and Loevenhart observed a dramatic change of behavior in a catatonic patient while studying respiratory stimulation with sodium cyanide: "The patient relaxed Fiom the rigidly held posture, eyes opened, facial expression appeared animated and a few intelligent and relevant replies were obtained to our questions." Hans Berger, the father of electroencephalography, noted a similar transient remission in 1921 after giving 50 mg. of cocaine hydrochloride by hypodermic to 11 catatonic patients. In 1928, remissions of catatonic stupor lasting from 2 to 25 minutes were observed by Loevenhart, Lorenz, and Waters, following inhalation of 30 per cent CO2-7O per cent O2 mixtures. Bleckwenn reported that patients in a catatonic stupor would experience a remission from 4 to 14 hours after 0.5 Gm. of intravenous sodium amobarbital (Amytal). Early theories of the mechanism of these diug-induccd remissions of catatonia were highly speculative. Most workers attributed it to a stimulation of cortical functioning that had been depressed.'' Lindeman felt that the catatonic stupor was a state of increased inhibition which could be released by the amobarbital. The technique of electroencephalography made possible the direct measurement of cortical physiology. Lemere confirmed the early observations of Berger, Jasper, Davis, and Gibbs' 13> "'as to the paucity of alpha activity and predominance of fast ac-

Impairment of the cortical GABAergic inhibitory system in catatonic stupor: a case report with neuroimaging.
We report the case of a 32-year-old patient who presented with catatonic stupor during the course of acute aseptic encephalitis involving the right frontotemporal area. Flumazenil-PET performed during the stupor indicated decreased benzodiazepine receptor binding in the right frontotemporal area where glucose metabolism was preserved as revealed by FDG-PET. An injection of diazepam immediately ...
متن کاملIs quetiapine suitable for treatment of acute schizophrenia with catatonic stupor? A case series of 39 patients
PURPOSE We aimed to determine which antipsychotic is most effective for the treatment of acute schizophrenia with catatonic stupor. PATIENTS AND METHODS Data were obtained from the medical records of 450 patients with the diagnosis of schizophrenia, who had received acute psychiatric inpatient treatment between January 2008 and December 2010 at our hospital. Among them, 39 patients (8.7%) met...

We describe a case of catatonic stupor following simultaneous biparietal infarction. The patient recovered, a result not previously described in catatonia caused by this pattern of cerebral infarct.

Catatonic states do not always signify a psychiatric illness and may be a manifestation of an tmderlying medical or neurological illness. To assume that a patient who presents with a catatonic disorder must have exclusively a psychiatric disorder can lead to errors in diagnosis and management. Obvious physical illnesses such as epilepsy are easy to recognize but many subtle one? give rise to di...
